Flags of the World - United Arab Emirates Blog Post

Ahlan wa sahlan! I am StJohn Wright from Notarial Services (Yorkshire & Derbyshire) Limited, practicing as StJohn Wright Notary Public. Welcome to the fifteenth blog post about ‘Flags of the World’: this week the blog post is about the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The flag of the UAE has horizontal and vertical stripes of red, green, white, and black. The red stripe represents energy and the sacrifices made by the people of their nation, the green stands for growth and prosperity, the black stands for dignity, the white stripe represents peace and purity. Each colour in the flag signifies fertility, neutrality and the nation’s oil wealth.

In the UAE their population is 9.8 million people and is made up of over 200 nationalities, and its official language of the UAE is Arabic. There are seven Emirates in the UAE, and they are: Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, and Umm al Quwain. The country is the world's third largest oil producer with reserves of 98 million barrels. Dubai houses the world's tallest tower (the Burj Khalifa) at a height of 828m. The UAE is a predominantly Islamic country with over 9000 mosques.

Some key moments in recent history are that from 1935 onwards, there was onshore exploration for oil taking place. In 1958, the first commercial discoveries of oil were made, with oil exports which began in 1962. After independence from Britian in 1971, Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujayrah, Sharjah and Umm al Quwain formed the UAE and Sheikh Zayed Bin-Sultan Al Nuhayyan presided over the federation. Swiftly after this, the UAE joined the Arab League and the United Nations. In 1972, Ras-al-Khaymah joined the federation. The first-ever national elections were held in 2006, where a small number of hand-picked voters chose half of the members of the Federal National Council. In 2020, the UAE established diplomatic relations with Israel and signed the Abraham Accords (these were a series of joint agreements initially between Israel, UAE and Bahrain). And finally, the UAE became the fifth country in the world (and the first Arab country) to reach Mars when its Hope spacecraft went into orbit around the planet, in 2021. As an avid space fanatic, this sort of knowledge thrills and inspires me to dream about what might be out there in the ether, and to think about the meaning of our lives. It is honestly fascinating!

An affidavit in the UK is a written statement from an individual, which is sworn to be true. In other words, it is an oath that what they are saying is the truth. You may need to use an affidavit most commonly in divorce proceedings, property disputes and debt cases. If you need an affidavit for property disputes, especially, please do get in touch and I will be happy to help as best I can; just get in touch via the methods below.

The national animal of the UAE is the Arabian Oryx. It is a medium-sized antelope with a distinct shoulder bump, straight horns and a tufted tail. The national dish is Khuzi, which is roast lamb presented with nuts, vegetables and raisins on top of a bed of spicy rice. And the national drink is Karak: this is a sweet chai tea served with milk and spices including saffron, cinnamon and ginger.
